How the deck stair calculator works

Planning deck stairs starts with the total rise: the vertical distance from the lower landing to the top of the deck. This stair calculator estimates how many risers are needed, then divides the total rise by that count so the actual risers are equal.

Deck stair calculation

number of risers = ceiling(total rise ÷ target riser)

actual riser = total rise ÷ number of risers

number of treads = risers − 1

total run = treads × tread depth

Example

With a 96 inch total rise and a 7.5 inch target riser, the calculator chooses 13 risers.

The actual riser is about 7.38 inches, with 12 treads.

At a 10.5 inch tread depth, the total horizontal run is 126 inches.
